A Wedding Dress for Caeli ~ Page 3 ~

Caeli wanted even more flaring, so I decided that I would make a completely new mock up with extra-wide flaring and tailor it down from there, instead of having to tack on extra panels. I ran out to buy some fabric, but didn't find another nice satin in the stores right near me. I was so anxious to just get on with the work that I ended up with a rather awkward fabric that stretched a bit. I decided to use it anyway, since I was happy with the torso of the first mock-up. I would use this second mock-up as a way to size out the skirt.I took half of the first mock-up apart and used the pieces as pattern guides while cutting the new fabric. I added an additional 50 inches all the way around the bottom. I thought that would look a bit ridiculous and that I would definitely want to taper it down. When I sewed the pieces together, however, I found that I actually liked the effect.
I took these digital photos on a very humid day - the fabric is very wrinkly and the hems were pinned.

I put the first mock-up together again and sent both of them to Caeli to try on: the first for fit around the torso, and the second for an idea of the skirt. Caeli had also decided that she wanted straps on the dress and a rounded neckline with flutter sleeves. I sent her some strap-shapes I had cut out of fabric and told her to safety pin them on to the first mock-up as she had it on so that I could see where I would have to cut them on the final version.
July 22, 2002:
At this point, she likes the dress (yes!) and we have ordered some ivory embroidered organza for the top layer. We think that there will be two more layers of a lightweight satin or satin-like material underneath. I am going to be flying down to Ohio the evening of September 17 - the wedding is the evening of the 21st. I will sew the dress down there so that I can have Caeli fit it on as I finish it.
